Summer Fruits:

As summer arrives, the first fruits of the season start to make their appearance.

Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the first fruits to ripen in the spring. Here’s what you need to know:

Picking Season: Typically from mid-June to late July.

Best Varieties: Sweet, juicy strawberries that are perfect for eating fresh, desserts, or homemade jam.

Picking Tips: Choose berries that are bright red all over with a glossy shine. Avoid pale or green-tipped fruit.

Raspberries

Raspberries are a summer favourite, known for their vibrant colour and tart flavour.

Picking Season: Typically from late June through August.

Best Varieties: Soft, sweet raspberries that are wonderful for eating fresh, baking, or freezing for later use.

Picking Tips: Look for berries that are rich red and come away easily from the plant. Avoid fruit that is pale or mushy.

Gooseberries

Picking Season: Typically from late June to late July.

Best Varieties: Both green and red gooseberries are excellent for cooking, baking, and making jams or chutneys.

Picking Tips: Choose firm, plump berries. They can be picked slightly underripe for cooking or fully ripe for a sweeter flavour.

Blackcurrants

Picking Season: Typically from early July to early August.

Best Varieties: Intensely flavoured berries that are ideal for jams, cordials, baking, and freezing.

Picking Tips: Pick berries that are deep black and glossy, growing in full clusters. Avoid any that are still red or green.

Red Currants

Picking Season: Typically from early July to early August.

Best Varieties: Bright, tart berries perfect for jellies, sauces, desserts, and summer puddings.

Picking Tips: Look for firm, translucent red berries growing in full strings. Pick whole clusters rather than individual berries.

Blackberries

Picking Season: Typically from late July through August.

Best Varieties: Large, sweet berries that are great for crumbles, pies, jams, and freezing.

Picking Tips: Choose berries that are deep black and plump. They should come away easily from the plant. Avoid red or hard berries, which are not yet ripe.
